Console - Gamepad Features

A games console control pad is one of the main ways in which a gamer interacts and immerses in their gameplay. Gamepads are available in a variety of shapes, colours and types of connection.

Console GamePads, Joysticks & Buttons

Most gamepads come with a directional analogue (d-pad) which allows you to control your gamplay in a controlled manner (up, down, left or right), while a stick (which is sometimes referred to as a mini-stick) is a digital form of control which being essentially a joystick allows for more sensitive control. For example, if you are playing in a stealth game then you could make characters movements more accurately with a stick.

As with all forms of gaming, both types of controller are suitable, it just depends on the gamer and the type of game you are involved with.

RF/Wireless & Vibration Effects

Most sixth generation consoles come with a wired controller included which offers a certain amount of cable length between you and the console. As accessories for these consoles have developed, gamers have demanded innovative new ways to move around when playing or be positioned further away from the console than standard wired controllers allow. In response, RF or Wireless controllers were designed and developed to meet their needs.

Seventh Generation Gamepads

Now some seventh generation games consoles such as the PS3 and Wii have taken this development on board and have included wireless technology such as Bluetooth which means that the default controller is a non-cable model. For effects and increased gamer interaction, most console controllers feature additional technology that gives a vibration effect as certain events happen during the game.

Gameplay Motion Detection

A new development that has occurred with 7th generation of console such as PS3 and Wii is motion detection technology. When enabled this means the movement of the controller effect the movements with the game, which mean the direction pad and mini-stick are not required as much as this is a new form of control.
